Stopping Smoking - Belief and Persistence - Page 1
Stop Smoking

Congratulations on becoming a free person!

It must be a great feeling to see for yourself that you are able to break those fettering shackles of addiction.

It must be a wonderfully empowering feeling to know that you have the power - you are not a victim, you have a choice.

A few battles have been won, but every day is still a battle and the war is not yet over.

Some moments may seem so tough that you will be ready to give it all up for the sake of one more puff.

If you do feel that, it is most natural. However, you may have noticed that if you wait a few minutes and put things in perspective, the notion of lighting a cigarette seems like part of a dying habit that is desperately struggling to survive.

Now when this notion arises, remember a couple of things. Don't listen to the voice that begs you to have 'only one cigarette'. One is never enough. Be resilient and defend yourself.

And remember the golden rule, the unshakable truth:

• The nature of existence is impermanence.

• Any rising event is bound, by the law of nature, to pass.

When you experience a difficult moment all you have to do is remember:

This too shall pass.

Also remember that the agony and strife are not yours, they are the pains of the dying addiction. But since addiction dwells within you, its pains are experienced within you. The anguish may be tremendous now as addiction approaches its death and becomes desperate.

Remember that addiction will do anything within its capacity to survive. And its best strategy right now is to bombard you with craving.

Don't succumb, no matter what!

Remember that you are much stronger than addiction. It is a great feeling to be a winner - a triumph of such caliber should give you a tremendous sensation of power.

You've won a few important battles, so reward yourself and celebrate: you deserve it. Be good to yourself, treat yourself with respect, you have earned it!
