Staying a non-smoker - Facts and Allies - Page 8
Stop Smoking

Most conventional stress management techniques strive to teach you how to relax. Now, how can you relax when rocket fuel is running in your veins? It doesn't make sense.

You can't just close your eyes and quietly relax when you are fully energized for life-or-death action. Thus the best, most natural and beneficial stress management strategy is to use stress and consume it instead of being consumed by it.

Using it does not mean bursting into anger or rage attacks. Remember that negative emotions, by definition, will only breed further strife.

When you are undergoing a stress attack, don't stay idle and allow it to chew you up from within. Call on your awareness, your 'head servant' who is responsible for the house. Shake yourself out of your misery and engage yourself in some kind of energetic activity.

How to use stress energy? There are endless ways. It can be an activity that is related to work, where you use the fuel to increase your productivity and efficiency; or it can be a recreational activity that will just burn the fuel and hopefully be both entertaining and beneficial to your health.

Just remind yourself that the stress fuel in your body is empowering you - don't stay idle, find a creative way to use it for your benefit. Turn the situation around by calling on awareness, and instead of dwelling on negative emotions make the most out of the circumstance.

In an urban environment most people would just go to the gym. You may be doing this already as a strategy for stress management. That's excellent, but augment it by calling awareness to the scene and it will help improve your efficiency. Walk or run on your treadmill, do the aerobic class, or cycle class or boxing class or any gym activity that you like. If you don't already go to a gym, join one. Gyms create a conducive environment and framework for working out, which is very important. Paying a monthly or yearly fee is also an encouragement to go and use it.
