Commonsense is a most important tool for any scientific endeavor. The other tool is to experiment and observe.
This place is not for the gullible. If you hear a theory, like the sound of it and immediately adopt it, it is just a matter of time before another theory that is to your liking crops up to replace the old one.
The entire self-development industry is based on this notion. Every year a few new self-development books hit the bestseller lists with new and amazing theories. A year or so later they disappear into oblivion and make way for other theories. You will discover that it is mostly the same people who keep buying these books. People are constantly looking for new theories that may comfort them, emotionally and existentially. They maintain their futile search for a solution that is outside of themselves. Theories have thus become a matter of trend and fashion, replaced in the next season just like last year's wardrobe.
Long-lasting values to live by are very rare and one cannot just buy them off the shelf - one actually needs to work hard for them.
You are invited to experiment with our ideas by using your commonsense and observing thoroughly.
Yet at the same time, if resistance rises within you, fault-finding and judging the new ideas, consider that this may be the product of an innate defense mechanism that is striving to maintain the old behavioral pattern, the old ideas and prevailing thoughts.
As before, you are kindly asked to listen with a fresh attitude, allowing the information to permeate and giving it a chance by opening up to it. In any case, you will take from it only what you decide is valuable for you.
But before you are too quick to judge and discard, use your commonsense. If the information 'feels' rights to your commonsense, experiment with it, validate it, see it working for you. Only then should you embrace new ideas and make them yours.
'Philosophy in action' means just that - pondering an idea and experimenting with it. Intellectual debate is just philosophy, and action without a sound base will prove to be a shortcoming. This information may lead to transformation only if it is acted upon. |
