Smoking and Addiction Facts - Page 9
Stop Smoking

Now that you have reflected on the above, here are a couple of ideas which, if exercised, will make a great difference:

1. As long as you stick to the 'gain pleasure avoid pain' formula you are trapped! But the moment you consciously decide to work with the opposite formula - by choosing to give up a certain pleasure, knowing you'll attract pain - the reward will be incredible. Furthermore, the 'pleasure' you give up will lose its seductive grip, and the 'pain' you attract will hardly bother you.

2. Please remember the order of events. You smoke, and so your brain gets its dose of nicotine. After a while the effect wears off, and an unnoticed signal is sent to your body. You light another cigarette. If you don't light up, the signal becomes stronger and stronger.

What you have to realize is that this is all happening in your body. The manifestation of discomfort, the stress and the nervousness are all to be found in the body. This is a key issue for dealing with the symptoms. Once you experience them in the mind you are already in a state of reaction, but if you can catch them in the body you will be able to neutralize them. In your mind the symptoms can reach a level of hysteria, but in the body they are only sensations of discomfort. Catch them in the body!
