The First Golden Master Principle

On a continuous daily basis, burn as much energy as you introduce into the body.

If you do the crime, be ready and willing to do the time.

It is common knowledge that by eating and drinking you introduce energy, in the form of calories, into your system. By simply living, you burn this energy. But if you introduce more energy into the body than you exert, the excess energy units will be stored as fat. This is obvious and elementary, yet it is the 'Master Principle' of maintaining a balanced body weight.

Rather than complicating the situation by dwelling on all kinds of complex theories, we simply suggest that you stick to the golden principle of burning as many calories as you have taken in. If you do the crime of eating a big dinner and a yummy dessert, do the time by walking on your treadmill or jogging around the block.

You cannot go wrong with this principle. Simply make sure you are active enough to burn an equal or greater volume of calories to the amount you take in. If you like eating chocolate or ice-cream, then pay for them with a game of tennis or a long walk along the beach or in the park.

There are two ways of living by the golden principle. One is to be more conscious of your intake - for example, eating less food and/or eating lean foods, grains, vegetables, etc. The other way is to burn more calories - for example, by taking long walks, jogging, or working out in the gym.

The most effective and rewarding method is to have a good balance between both ways. Eat the food you enjoy, but be conscious of the quantities and the content and have an active lifestyle that meets your eating habits. If you follow this method, and remember to pay attention to your belt, you can immediately apply the 'kill it while it's still young' principle when you notice you've gained a couple of pound or a kilo. In such cases you don't really need to embark on a diet or change your lifestyle drastically. Rather simply shift the balance for a few days, doing more physical activity and being more conscious of what you eat. A few days, maybe a week, and your belt will be back to the length you are comfortable with.

If the circumstances are such that you end up being several pounds or kilos above your desired weight, it means that you'll need to embark on a diet first. Establish the weight you feel comfortable with, or the clothing size you would like to retain. Then, once you reach this point, you can move on to maintaining it, according to the Golden Master Principle.
