Why 'Philosophy in Action'?


Philosophy is a science of truth seeking.

Or, as defined by The American Heritage Dictionary:

.… the love of, including the search after, wisdom; in actual usage, the knowledge of phenomena as explained by, and resolved into, causes and reasons, powers and laws.'

When it stands alone, philosophy has little merit apart from its use in social discussions and mere intellectual practices.

Action is just action - an exercise, a movement, an exertion of energy.

But when you combine good philosophy with right action you create a powerful tool that can achieve unimaginable results.

Action, it can be said, is the opposite of idleness.

You cannot afford to maintain idleness if you want to quit smoking. In order to quit smoking you have to do something about it - you have to take ACTION.

Nevertheless, your effort may be feeble and your energy scattered unless you base your action on a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding.

•Why are you taking action?

•Where are your actions leading you?

Can you positively and firmly answer these questions?

If you are unprepared, you may launch the bravest action yet never achieve the results that you seek.

Such a failed action or, even worse, a sequence of several failed actions, might result in a reluctance to ever attempt and take action in that direction again. It can promote insecurity and a sense of helplessness.

One then accepts the circumstances as being as grim as they are as unchangeable.

False expectations lead to tremendous frustration and despair.

Frustration and despair result in internal crisis, and crisis tends to resolve itself by finding who or what is responsible for it.

And so we learn to blame something or someone else for our shattered expectations.

If the subject of our blame is found outside of ourselves we experience anger, resentment and hate.

Or:

If the blame for our failure is found inside ourselves we will instead harvest guilt, insecurity and self-resentment.

Could there be another way?
