Is it possible that you have procrastinated about taking action until now because you do not believe you have the power to quit smoking?
If so, let’s tackle the belief itself rather than clinging to it blindly or being scared to act. In general, it is important to review your beliefs and make sure they support rather than limit you.
The facts are that millions of people have managed to quit smoking completely, and they still enjoy a good meal and a drink. They actually have an improved lifestyle. Don’t allow any of your beliefs to discourage you from taking action. You need to have all your faculties aligned to support you when you move into action.
If you believe that you cannot stop smoking – you are wrong. Don’t try to prove that you are right by failing. What kind of logic is that – it’s rather like shooting yourself in the leg.
Instead, destroy that belief of yours and create another one instead. A belief that is so disempowering must be the work of addiction. It is addiction that planted the belief and it is addiction that maintains it.
Here’s a new belief for you:
There’s no doubt, none whatsoever, that you are competent and up to the task of quitting smoking. You can easily quit by simply making a firm decision, and once you have made this firm decision you will be as unshakeable as a granite wall. No matter how hard it might prove to be, you are going to break the fetters of smoking for good, and be free.
This is the truth!
And so you’d better believe it.
Think about it this way – your mind is the boss and your body is your property.
Imagine yourself as a domain that you fully own and manage, and imagine this domain to be lush.
Now, due to your generosity (or naivete, if you like) as a host you have allowed some guests to stay on your property.
Imagine that your beliefs are guests.
They are not you, they are not part of you – they are guests residing in your domain.
Instead of appreciating your gracious hospitality some of these ‘guests’ are abusive, fractious, and disrespectful towards the property and its owner. Why would you continue to be hospitable and allow such ‘guests’ to be fed at your table?
A conscientious guest would contribute to the improvement and upkeep of the property and the benefit of the proprietor. A guest can always contribute something, even if it is only a harmonious mood. Apart from anything, a guest should never hassle the host or damage the property.
Your body and mind are the only property you really have, and you are the sole proprietor. No-one else can claim responsibility for them – only you.
But being responsible can be difficult and it sometimes seems easier to shake this responsibility off. And if you are not responsible, there is always somebody or something to blame.
Beliefs are guests. Continue to nourish the beliefs that are supportive of your physical and mental wellbeing, and remember that you have the power, the right and the authority to send any rascal guest out on to the street. |
