Becoming a non-smoker - Page 7
Stop Smoking

Remember, it is not you who is in charge here. It is addiction that thinks and decides for you.

If you knew there was a ruthless murderer in your house, wouldn't you run for dear life?

Remember we talked about pain and pleasure? We said that smoking is good for you, it makes you feel good. But we also said it is like a potion laced with poison and honey. You are after the sweet taste, so you take the poison in as well.

Now you understand how it works.

But if you think that mentioning poison is an analogy, remember there are 5000 poisonous chemicals in every cigarette you smoke.

Here are some of these chemicals for your consideration:

• Carbon monoxide: the deadly gas excreted by car exhaust.

• Ammonia: a chemical prevalent in detergents and floor cleaners.

• Formaldehyde: also used to preserve stuffed animals.

• Arsenic: an effective rat poison.

• Methane: used as rocket fuel.

• Butane: as in lighter fluid.

• Cadmium: as in nickel cadmium batteries.

• Hydrogen cyanide: used in gas chamber poisoning.

• Benzene, acetone, formic acid, hydrogen cyanide, radon …

… the list is 5000 substances long.

You wouldn't want someone you love to inhale all these deadly substances, and you wouldn't even give your enemy such potent poisons. And yet you take them in daily. The way you do this is by not thinking about it, by somehow managing to push it away from your awareness.

That's the work of addiction - that's the hypnosis you are under. It's time to be responsible, even if it may cause some strife. You need to make a brave decision, and you need to make it now.

Today is your last smoking day. You will finish your daily allowance and as of tomorrow you will be a non-smoker.
You will be free.
It will take a couple of days to clean your system out, and up to a couple of weeks for the full adaptation of your brain.

It is up to you whether to make a big declaration to friends and family, asking for their sympathy and support, or to keep it to yourself. There are no rules. You do what's best for you, as long as you do not smoke.
